A great start to the year ...

What a great start to the year for music at Blandford St Mary

On Friday 3rd October we had the privilege of having our music teachers join us for our Friday assembly.

We heard 2 of Mr Turnbull's brass students play for us as well as the piano students improvise on the piano as we all left the hall.

As well as that we sang songs along with a trumpet, a violin, the piano and 2 guitars (on being Mr Lavis!).

We are very lucky at BSM to have a wide range of instrumental teachers to learn from. The choices include:

• tenor horn

• drums

If anyone would like to have a go at learning any one of these instruments then come and let your class teacher or Mr Lavis know and we will get you started.

Let's talk about time

The mini BSO orchestra arrived at our school - a trombone, a bassoon, a violin, a french horn and lots of percussion.

What did we do? We had a great concert all about time from Jurassic Park, Doctor Who, a waltz played in a minute flat, One, Two, Three a' clock and lots more besides. We had children up and dancing, keeping the beat, tracking the dynamics, conducting and joining in with The Dance of The Hours.

A fantastic time had by all of KS 2. What about KS1 I hear you say? Well they had a brilliant concert called Let's Dance.

Okay - so we have our pieces of music and we have so far heard 5 of them ... but which memeber of staff chose them?

The BSM Music Competition

As from next week the BSM music competition will start!

Each week a piece of music will be played that has been chosen by a member of staff. The only thing you have to do is work out which member of staff chose the music.

What a fantastic way to finish the Easter term . . . whole class singing, soloists on an array of different instruments, recorder club and mini bands.

We finished with a dance spectacular from Pure Funk and a selection of our pupils. . . amazing!

Music Competition

Roll up, roll up ...

Blandford St Mary Primary School are going to have a music competition. Keep your eyes peeled on the blog for more information such as how to enter and how to vote.

Each member of staff will be choosing a piece of their favourite music and it will be played each week in the hall. The only problem is that you wont know which member of staff has chosen which piece of music!

You have to use your musical talents to work it out!

Magical Music

Thursday 13th December was a memorable assembly for the children at Blandford St Mary Primary School. Four of our music teachers visited us and shared their expertise with us. There were even children from the school who were brave enough to perform to the rest of the school!

First up was our violins. Natalia and Charlotte played us two tunes that they had learnt - Well Done!

Next came the guitar and Daniel, who has only been learning for a short time, played Jingle Bells for us. Mrs Ansell also played to us.

Then Mr Turnbull played the trumpet for us. He let everyone make a trumpet shape with their hand and blow through it so they could play their own hand trumpet.

Brass lessons have only been taking place since March but still, Tom came out to play a scale and the theme from Wallace and Grommit. Fab stuff!

Finally, came Mr Manners on the drum kit. He has several spaces due to Year 6 leavers last year and lots of children certainly seemed keen!

Everyone clapped the steady beat and Mr Manners improvised over the top. It was great.
